How Gaviscon Advance works

Gaviscon Advance creates a protective barrier to stop acid from refluxing up the oesophagus (food pipe). What’s more, we’ve made sure Gaviscon Advance has “mucoadhesion” properties - this means it coats the oesophagus, providing long-lasting protection.

We know how disruptive heartburn and acid reflux can be, which is why Advance is designed for long-lasting relief - so that you can get on with enjoying everyday life.

Compared to Gaviscon Original, Gaviscon Advance’s extra strength formulation has twice the concentration of sodium alginate - forming a strong and resilient 'raft' in the process.

The liquid formulation does not contain sugar or gluten and can be taken during pregnancy or breast-feeding.

What’s more, Advance has the lowest sodium content of any product in the Gaviscon range, making it our recommended solution for pregnant and breast-feeding mothers.

A sodium alginate solution

Sodium alginate is extracted from the cell walls of seaweed. It helps the stomach block rising acid, the root cause of the discomfort heartburn and indigestion sufferers know so well.

Gaviscon Advance is the product we recommend pregnant mothers to take. It’s lower in sodium and is designed to act locally, making it a safe product to take.

Never exceed the dosage information on the back of the product. You can take up  10ml of liquid. Try to take these after meals. If you have been using Gaviscon for more than 7 days, you should consult your doctor.

It’s very common. In fact, the vast majority of mothers get these symptoms at one stage or another. Your growing bump, alongside the hormonal changes happening in your body, make it a common occurrence. Read more on our pregnancy page
